How the programme is put together

The 7 required subjects are the ones every student on this programme takes. They open with introductory statistics and then work through the applied methods the rest of the field rests on — forecasting, interactive visualisation, network analysis and optimisation — before a three-part sequence in predictive analytics that runs from machine-learning tools, to neural nets and regression, to dimension reduction, clustering and association rules. That is what makes them the core: they are the shared grounding rather than a specialism, and every student needs them whichever direction they take afterwards.

The electives are where you do specialise, and they are sold as four places rather than four named courses on purpose. Nobody can sensibly choose electives before starting the programme, so you do not choose here. You pick the subject and its start date together, months from now if that is when you get to it — once the core subjects are behind you.

Every course runs on a fixed start date with a named instructor who marks your work — these are taught courses, not recordings to watch alone. Teaching happens in Canvas, which is where your classroom, your assignments and your grades live. You take one subject at a time and in the published order: a course becomes bookable once the one before it is finished and your result is recorded. The pace is yours — there is no schedule to keep up with — but the order is the programme's.

The order you take them in

The programme is taken one course at a time, in this order. Each one becomes bookable when the course before it has finished and your result has been recorded — so you are never choosing between eleven things at once, and you cannot get ahead of yourself.

Worth knowing what that means in practice: because a course only counts as finished once its batch has ended and your result is in, the 11 courses run one after another rather than side by side. On eight-week batches that is a couple of years of study, well inside the six years. If you need to move faster than the sequence allows, ask us before you buy.

Academic credit, and the TESU degree

Selected courses carry credit recommendations from the American Council on Education (ACE), the body US colleges use to evaluate coursework taken outside a university. A recommendation is exactly that: ACE says what the course is worth, and each institution decides for itself whether to accept it.

Thomas Edison State University (TESU) offers a BS and an MS in Data Science and Analytics under a curricular partnership. TESU awards the degree; the specialist coursework is what is taught here. Worth knowing before you buy. Each of these is published by the university named against it, not by us:

  • TESU: Courses taken through UpThink are not eligible for federal financial aid.
  • TESU: They do not count towards the residency requirement for a degree programme at Thomas Edison State University. TESU asks for 15 semester hours earned directly from TESU on the per-credit plan — 24 for military students — however much credit you bring in from elsewhere.

We publish a credit-hour figure only where we have verified one. Where a course shows no number, it is not confirmed rather than worth nothing. If you are planning a degree around a particular total, ask us and ask the university before you buy.

Who it is for

A good fit if

  • You are working towards a degree this coursework counts towards, and want the specialist subjects settled in one payment.
  • You expect to take most of this curriculum anyway, and would rather pay once than 11 times.
  • You study around a job and want the programme to tell you what is next, one subject at a time, rather than plan it yourself.

  • You are relying on federal financial aid — it cannot be used for these courses.
  • You need the credit accepted by an institution we have no partnership with, and have not yet confirmed with them that they will take it.

Questions people ask

When do I have to start?
Whenever you like, within six years of buying. That deadline is fixed on the day you pay and never moves afterwards, and it is long enough that somebody taking one course a term is nowhere near it. Your account shows the date against every course.
Which email should I sign in with?
Whichever address you want your Canvas login to be. If you are studying towards a degree at one of our partner universities, use the address they gave you — that is what tells us where to report your credit. There is nothing to type at the till: the account you sign in with is the account the programme lands on.
Can I take more than one at a time?
No — this programme opens one course at a time, in the published order, and the next becomes bookable when the one before it has finished and your result is recorded. If you want to study several at once, every course here is also sold on its own and nothing stops you booking them all.
How do I choose my electives?
You do not choose them now. Four elective places sit on your account, and you spend one each time you pick a start date for a course from the elective list. The subject and the date are the same decision, made when you get there. They open once all 7 core courses are finished, and then one at a time.
Can I swap a required course for another elective?
No. The required subjects are required by the programme, and the elective places can only be spent on courses from the elective list.
What if a course has no dates yet?
New dates are added through the year and appear in your account as soon as they are. You will not lose the course by waiting.
Do I pay anything when I choose a date?
No. It is already paid for.
What if I have already taken one of these somewhere else?
Tell us. We can open the next course for you rather than make you sit something you have already done — the sequence is there to keep the programme in order, not to make you repeat work.
Will another university accept this credit?
That is their decision, not ours. ACE recommends what a course is worth; the receiving institution decides whether to award it. Ask them before you buy if it matters to you.
