What the credit is, and what it is not.

Selected courses carry a credit recommendation from the American Council on Education. A recommendation is exactly that: ACE says what a course is worth, and each institution decides for itself whether to award it.

How ACE credit works

The American Council on Education is the body US colleges use to evaluate coursework taken outside a university — corporate training, military service schools, and courses like these. Its reviewers look at what a course covers and how it is assessed, and publish a recommendation: this is worth so many semester hours, at this level.

That recommendation is not a grade and not a transcript entry. It is an opinion a receiving institution may accept in whole, in part, or not at all. Some accept ACE recommendations as a matter of policy; some assess course by course; some do not take them.

One note on names. This shop is LearnStatistics; the provider named in the ACE recommendations and in every partnership below is UpThink, which operates it. If you are checking any of this with ACE or with a university, UpThink is the name to give them.

So the honest way to read a credit figure on this site is: this is what the course is worth if the place you are taking it to accepts it. Ask them before you buy if it matters to you. We cannot answer for them and neither can ACE.

What TESU publishes about this coursework

  • Courses taken through UpThink are not eligible for federal financial aid.
  • They do not count towards the residency requirement for a degree programme at Thomas Edison State University. TESU asks for 15 semester hours earned directly from TESU on the per-credit plan — 24 for military students — however much credit you bring in from elsewhere.

We publish a credit-hour figure only where we have verified one. A course with no number here is not a course without value — it is a course whose number we have not confirmed, and we would rather show nothing than a plausible guess you might plan a degree around.

Planning a degree around a particular total? Ask us and ask your university, before you buy. That is not a disclaimer — it is the only way to get an answer either of us can stand behind.

How your result is reported

Most people take these courses direct — no university involved, nothing reported to anybody, and that is the ordinary way to buy here.

If you are studying towards a degree at one of the universities above, you are recognised by one thing: the address on your account. There is nothing to fill in and no box to tick — sign in with your university email (@student.tesu.edu) rather than a personal one, and that is the whole of it.

When a course finishes, we record the grade and the credit hours as they stood on that day, because Canvas grades keep moving and a credit-hour figure is a compliance claim that gets re-verified. That record is what is filed, and it is filed with the university on your account at that moment.
